Reaction: a three‑heat reflex test for your live quiz

Reaction is a quick reflex test that runs on every player's device at once. The screen waits, then shows GO, and each player taps as fast as they can. A round is three heats, and the fastest average time wins.

Twitchy players lose here. Tapping before GO, or too soon after it, counts as the slowest possible time for that heat. Hosts use it as a short break in the question flow that anyone can understand in seconds.

Quick facts

Players
1 or more. Works solo or with a whole room. Everyone plays the same heats on their own device.
Length
Roughly 12 to 20 seconds, depending on how long the random waits before each GO run.
Solo room
Yes. A single player can run it, and it is part of the hostless Free Play pool. A solo player just plays for their own time.

How it works

  1. The host launches Reaction and every device shows the pad in a waiting state.

  2. Heat 1 waits a random time, then GO appears and players tap.

  3. Heat 2 has a longer wait that always includes a fake-out flash, designed to tempt an early tap.

  4. Heat 3 has a shorter minimum wait, so GO can arrive sooner than the first heat taught you to expect.

  5. A GO left alone for 1.5 seconds is a miss. A tap under 100 ms after GO is treated as a guess, not a reaction.

  6. Each device's time is the mean of its three heats, the server re-checks it, and the lowest time ranks first.

Tap or click anywhere on the page, or press Space or Enter, the moment GO appears. Do not tap during the wait or the fake-out.

Quiz questions

None. It is pure skill and does not use any question from your set.

Tips for hosts

  • Tell players about the fake-out beforehand if you want a fair, friendly round; watching beats guessing.
  • Run it after a heavy question block when the room needs a quick reset, since a round takes well under half a minute.
  • Remind players that steady beats lucky: a false start or miss counts as the slowest time, so one bad heat drags the whole average.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Reaction winner decided?

Each player's score is the mean of their three heats, and the lowest mean time wins. A false start or a missed heat counts as the slowest possible tap for that heat, so consistency matters more than one lucky tap.

What counts as a false start?

Tapping before GO, or less than 100 ms after it, is treated as a guess rather than a reaction. In a three-heat round that heat is lost and counts as the slowest possible time.

Does the host need to set anything up?

No. The host just launches it. The three heats and their random waits are planned for the round, and the same plan is used for the whole room. There are no round-length settings.
