Only Up: a live climbing race fuelled by quiz answers

Only Up is a side‑view platformer race up a mountain with six summits. Players run and jump upwards, and every move drains an energy battery. The quiz is the fuel: correct answers charge the battery, and nothing else does.

Hosts use it when they want a longer, more physical break from the question loop. Every climber appears in the same mountain, so the room watches the whole field race upward at once.

Quick facts

Players
1 or more. No minimum and no fixed cap. Everyone climbs the same seed-built mountain, so it works solo or with a whole room.
Length
90 seconds by default. The host can set 15 to 180 seconds, and a longer round builds a taller mountain.
Solo room
Yes. The launcher has no minimum player count. A solo player climbs the same mountain and is scored on their best altitude, though the set still needs at least 8 usable questions.

How it works

  1. The host picks Only Up, optionally sets the round length, and launches it from a set with at least 8 multiple choice, letters or numbers questions.

  2. Each player starts with 10 energy out of a maximum of 100, enough for a few hops to learn the controls.

  3. Running costs energy and each jump costs 2, or 3 for a double jump, so players open the answer panel to refuel.

  4. A correct answer adds 10 energy, plus a streak bonus of 2 at three in a row and 40 from five in a row. A wrong answer locks the panel for 3.5 seconds.

  5. Score is best altitude in whole metres, and the first player to reach the top plausibly ends the round a few seconds later for everyone.

Player controls

On a device, use the on-screen run and jump pads and open the answer panel when you need energy. On a keyboard, left and right or A and D run, Space, up or W jump, and E or Enter opens the answer panel, where 1 to 4 pick an answer.

Host settings

  • Only Up duration in seconds, from 15 to 180 (default 90). The mountain's height scales with it.

Quiz questions

The quiz is fuel, not a gate. Players choose when to answer, and the panel also opens by itself when the battery is empty. Each correct answer charges the battery by 10, with a streak bonus of 2 from three correct in a row and 40 from five in a row. A wrong answer earns nothing and locks the panel for 3.5 seconds. Questions that repeat once the batch runs out pay a flat 5. Borrowed questions are marked used so the main quiz does not ask them, and unseen ones are handed back afterwards.

Tips for hosts

  • Tell players that a streak of five correct answers refuels the battery almost completely, so accuracy beats speed.
  • Use a longer round for a bigger room, since extra seconds also mean a taller mountain and more questions borrowed from the set.
  • Check that your set has at least 8 multiple choice, letters or numbers questions left, because song questions are skipped.

Frequently asked questions

How is Only Up scored?

Score is the best altitude a climber reached, in whole metres, banked as a high-water mark. A fall does not lose banked height. The first plausible climb to the top ends the round for everyone a few seconds later.

What happens when a player gets an answer wrong in Only Up?

They get no energy and the answer panel is locked for 3.5 seconds before the next question loads. Their streak resets to zero. There is no other penalty, so wasted time is the cost.

How many questions does Only Up need?

At least 8 usable multiple choice, letters or numbers questions. If a set has fewer left, the launch is refused with a message saying how many remain. Song questions are left for the main quiz.
