Kaiju Smash: a live monster rampage for your quiz
Kaiju Smash is a long game that runs on your loaded question set. Each player hatches one of 30 kaiju species and stomps it around a shared toy city on their own device. Smashing buildings grows the monster, and question cards pop up during play. Right answers charge a laser beam and the species' signature special move.

Hosts use it as a big set-piece between quiz rounds and choose a 5, 7 or 10-minute run. The city is sized to the room, rebuild waves keep it standing, and the run builds to a mech fight the whole room shares. It closes with one Final Core question everyone answers together, while the projector shows the city.
Quick facts
- Players
- 1 or more. No player cap. The city is sized at launch, from 4 districts for 1 to 5 players up to 16 districts for 46 or more. Like every long game it needs a set with at least 15 multiple-choice, letters or numbers questions.
- Length
- An 8-second hatch pre-roll, then a 5, 7 or 10-minute run (7 minutes by default), then an 8-second podium before the results board.
- Solo room
- Yes. Nothing requires a minimum number of players. A small room gets the smallest 4-district city, and the mech's health scales with the number of players fighting it, counting at least one.
How it works
The host picks a run length and launches, and during the 8-second hatch every player picks a species while first-timers see three rules: smash to grow, answer for power-ups, bump rivals to shrink them.
Players walk into buildings and stomp to knock sections down for points, and smashing grows the kaiju from Tiny through Small, Big and Huge to Colossal.
Question cards open on their own while play carries on: a right answer adds a laser charge (up to 4) and fills the special, and three right in a row trigger a 10-second Grow Surge.
City events arrive on a fixed timeline, including rebuild waves, the Golden Tower and, on 7 and 10-minute runs, the Rush-Hour Train.
After a siren a mega-mech drops for the closing stretch, and laser hits on it score at least 120 points each, more for a bigger kaiju, an answer streak, a Rocket Fist or the final-minute Overheat.
Twenty-five seconds before the bell everyone gets the same Final Core question for 10 seconds, then the server replays and checks every score and adds placement points to the leaderboard.
Player controls
Drag the stick to walk your kaiju into buildings and tap anywhere to stomp. The BEAM button fires a laser charge, and ROAR has a 12-second cooldown; MOLT takes its place once your kaiju is ready to molt. A GRAB or THROW button appears when a prop is in reach, and the SPECIAL button fires your species' signature move once a right answer has charged it. Question cards are answered by tapping a tile, or with the letter or number pad. A device without 3-D graphics switches to a questions-only mode on the same clock.
Host settings
- Run length: 5, 7 or 10 minutes, chosen on the long game's card (7 minutes is the default).
- End now: a button on the host's live Kaiju Smash card that ends the run early.
Quiz questions
Questions come from the loaded set: multiple-choice, letters and numbers, never songs, and at least 15 usable questions are needed to launch. Each player gets their own feed. A card gives 20 seconds, a Power Core during the mech fight 15 seconds, and the shared Final Core 10 seconds. A right card answer pays 40 to 60 points depending on speed, grows the kaiju and charges the laser (up to 4 charges); a wrong one only resets the streak.
Tips for hosts
- Tell players a wrong answer costs nothing but the streak, so they should always have a go, and three right answers in a row buy a 10-second Grow Surge.
- Talk up the mech fight before the siren: every laser hit on the mech scores at least 120 points, so players who arrive holding charges are well placed.
- Point the room at the shared boss bar: the damage everyone deals by the Final Core sets a Gold, Silver or Bronze grade that shows on the results line.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Kaiju Smash last?
The host chooses 5, 7 or 10 minutes, and 7 is the default. An 8-second hatch comes first and an 8-second podium plays after the bell. The mech fight fills the last 110 seconds of a 5-minute run, 151 seconds of a 7-minute run and 210 seconds of a 10-minute run.
Do players lose anything for a wrong answer?
No points are taken away and movement is never affected. A wrong answer only misses the laser charge and resets the answer streak, and the card then reveals the right answer for multiple-choice and letters questions. A card that runs out of time costs nothing and keeps the streak.
How is Kaiju Smash scored?
Points come from smashed building sections, right answers, laser and mech hits, molts and the Final Core, all replayed and checked on the server. Players are ranked by that score, and the shared ladder turns the order into placement points: 3 for first, with roughly the top 20 percent of the room scoring.
