Penalty Shootout: a live football game powered by your quiz

Penalty Shootout is a 3D football game built on your question set. Each player answers their own stream of questions to load a rack of balls, then aims and strikes at goal with a keeper trying to read where they will shoot.

Hosts use it for a change of pace from the standard ten-second loop. Everyone plays at their own speed for a round length the host picks, and the most goals scored decides the table.

Quick facts

Players
1 or more. No minimum and no fixed cap. Every player has their own pitch, rack and keeper, so it works solo or with a whole room.
Length
45 seconds by default. The host can set the round from 20 to 90 seconds, after a 2.5 second intro.
Solo room
Yes. The launcher has no minimum player count and each player has their own rack and keeper, so one player can run a complete round.

How it works

  1. The host picks Penalty Shootout, optionally sets the round length, and launches it from a loaded question set.

  2. Each player starts with 5 balls in the rack and a 3D pitch on their own device.

  3. A player presses and holds to charge a timing meter and drags to move the aim reticle, then releases to strike.

  4. The timing of the release grades the strike and the keeper commits to a side. A shot that beats him is +1 goal, and the shot spot moves round five positions.

  5. Players can open a question card to reload whenever the rack is not full, and an empty rack opens one automatically. When the clock runs out, the most goals scored wins.

Player controls

Press and hold to charge the meter, drag while holding to move the aim reticle, and release to strike. The reticle returns to the middle after each taken shot, so players have to find each corner again. A very short tap is a dead tap and never counts.

Host settings

  • Shootout duration in seconds, from 20 to 90 (default 45).

Quiz questions

Questions fund every shot, because each strike spends a ball and balls only come from answers. A correct answer adds 3 balls, the first being a money ball. A wrong answer on a card the player chose to open adds no ball and books them: the next question waits 2 seconds. The one exception is the card an empty rack forces open, which still pays 1 ball on a miss but holds longest, at 3.3 seconds. The rack caps at 8.

Tips for hosts

  • Remind players that tapping through cards on a guess is slower and emptier than reading them, because a wrong answer pays no ball.
  • Use the default 45 seconds for quick rounds and go towards 90 for larger rooms with slower readers.
  • Tell players to vary the corner they aim for, since the keeper remembers where recent shots went.

Frequently asked questions

How is Penalty Shootout scored?

Each goal is worth +1, and the player with the most goals when the clock ends ranks first. Every shot spot is worth the same, so a tight angle scores the same as the penalty spot.

What does a wrong answer cost in Penalty Shootout?

On a card the player chose to open, a wrong answer pays no ball and the next question waits 2 seconds. If an empty rack forced the card open, a miss still pays 1 ball but the card is held for 3.3 seconds.

Can one player run Penalty Shootout alone?

Yes. There is no minimum player count and every player has a private pitch, rack and keeper. A solo player plays the same timed round, as long as the set has enough questions to feed it.
