Hoops: a live basketball shooting game powered by your quiz

Hoops turns a question set into a shooting contest. Each player works through their own stream of questions from your set, and every answer loads balls into a rack. Shots are taken in a 3D gym by holding and releasing on a moving timing meter.

Hosts use it as a break from the standard ten-second question loop. Everyone plays at their own pace for a round length you choose, and the player with the most baskets made tops the board.

Quick facts

Players
1 or more. No minimum and no fixed cap. It works solo or with a whole room, because every player has their own court and rack.
Length
45 seconds by default. The host can set the round from 20 to 90 seconds, after a 2.5 second intro.
Solo room
Yes. Nothing in the launcher requires a second player. Each player shoots against their own clock and rack, so a single player can run a full round.

How it works

  1. The host picks Hoops, sets the round length if they want a change, and launches it from a loaded question set.

  2. Every player starts with 5 balls in the rack and a 3D court on their own device.

  3. A player presses and holds to charge a timing meter, then releases while the needle is inside the green zone to shoot.

  4. A shot that grades good or perfect goes in for +1; near misses and bad releases do not score. The shot spot then moves round five set positions.

  5. Players can open a question card to reload whenever the rack is not full, and an empty rack opens one automatically. When the clock runs out, the most baskets made wins.

Player controls

Press and hold to run the meter, then release in the green. A very short tap is treated as a dead tap and never counts as a shot. Question cards are answered with the usual multiple choice, letter or number input.

Host settings

  • Shootout duration in seconds, from 20 to 90 (default 45).

Quiz questions

Questions are what fund the shots. Every shot spends one ball and the only way to earn balls is to answer. A correct answer adds 3 balls, and the first of them is a money ball with a green zone 1.5 times wider. A wrong answer still adds 1 ball, but its card stays on screen longer (1.6 seconds against 0.85 for a correct one), so guessing reloads slowly. The rack holds at most 8 balls. Questions come from your set and are marked used so the main quiz does not ask them again.

Tips for hosts

  • Choose a longer round, up to 90 seconds, for a big room so slower readers still get several reloads.
  • Tell players that reading the question beats guessing: a right answer is worth three balls and a wider green zone on the next shot.
  • Warn players that three baskets in a row put them on fire, which speeds the meter up by 15 per cent, so staying calm matters.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score in the Hoops quiz game?

Each made basket is worth +1 and the most baskets made is the ranking. Hoops only scores a release that grades good or perfect. Every shot spot is worth the same, so distance does not change the points.

What happens if a player answers a question wrong?

A wrong answer still adds 1 ball, so nobody gets stuck with an empty rack. It holds the card on screen for 1.6 seconds instead of 0.85, which makes a wrong guess slower to recover from than a right answer worth 3 balls.

Can I play Hoops with only one player?

Yes. The launcher has no minimum player count and each player has their own rack, court and clock. A solo player gets a full round with the same rules, and the set needs enough questions to feed the rack.
