Colour Clash: a live colour reflex game for your quiz

Colour Clash is a reflex game built on a simple trick. The screen shows a colour word, such as the name of a colour, painted in a different colour. Players must tap the tin of paint that the word names, not the paint it is written in.

Hosts use it as a 20-second warm-up or break between quiz questions. It needs no question set. Every player faces the same boards, and placement goes to the longest streak of right taps, with total score only breaking ties. It suits any room size.

Quick facts

Players
1 or more. Works solo or with a whole room. There is no fixed player cap.
Length
20 seconds from launch to the bell.
Solo room
Yes. The launcher sets no minimum, and each player's streak is scored on their own run, so one player can play it.

How it works

  1. The host launches Colour Clash and every device shows a colour word over a shelf of six paint tins.

  2. The word is painted in a different paint from the one it names, which is the trap.

  3. Players tap the tin that the word names. A right tap splats that paint, adds to the streak and deals the next board straight away.

  4. A wrong tap snaps the streak back to zero and holds the board briefly before the next one.

  5. After the first three boards the tins reshuffle every board, from board 8 the decoy paint sits right beside the right tin, and from board 11 the colours get closer in shade.

  6. At the bell the longest streak wins, and total score breaks ties.

Player controls

Tap one of the six paint tins. There is nothing to type.

Quiz questions

None, it is pure skill. Colour Clash does not use the loaded question set.

Tips for hosts

  • Explain the rule out loud before you launch it, because the round is only 20 seconds long.
  • Tell players that one wrong tap resets the streak, so a steady rhythm beats panicking.
  • Because placement is by streak, a careful player can beat a faster one who keeps missing.

Frequently asked questions

What do players have to tap in Colour Clash?

Players tap the tin of paint that the colour word names. The word is painted in a different colour on purpose, so the colour of the lettering is the trap and the meaning of the word is the answer.

How is Colour Clash scored?

Placement is by best streak of right taps in the 20 seconds. Each right tap scores 100 points plus 20 per streak step and a speed bonus, but score only breaks ties between players with the same streak.

Does a wrong tap end the round?

No. A wrong tap resets the streak to zero and holds the board for about three quarters of a second before the next one, then play continues until the 20-second clock runs out.
